Independent Living Program’s (ILP) | Transitional Age Youth (TAY)If you are under 21 years of age you may be eligible to receive YDS-ILP services and resources (go to their website at www.probation.lacounty.gov or www.ilponline.org or contact your ILP Coordinator to verify eligibility). The cost of Behind-The-Wheel Driving Training services are provided at no cost to you. If eligible, all cost are paid by YDS-ILP Program except for cancellation or extended enrollment fee.
If you are at least 18-years-old, meet the application requirements and pass the required test, you may be issued a California instruction permit. You must have an instruction permit while learning to drive. Your accompanying driver must be 18 years old or older and have a valid California Driver’s License. Note, an instruction permit does not permit you to drive alone-not even to a DMV field office to take the driving test.
Once your ILP Coordinator has verified your eligibility and you have completed the necessary paper work (DCFS YDS Request for Independent Living Program (LIP) Services) you may contact the school to begin your Behind-The-Wheel Drivers Training. You will receive the following:
- 6 Hours Behind-The-Wheel Training;
- Assistance with scheduling your DMV Driving Test;
- DMV Test Pre-preparation and transportation to a local DMV Office (2 attempts);
- 2 hours Defensive Driving Training if applicable;
- Note: there will be a $25.00 cancellation fee for failure to cancel 24 hours before your scheduled training date. Must complete lesson with three (3) months of enrollment or new enrollment fee may apply (these fees are not covered by ILP services and are your responsibility to pay).
